FAQ for Newborn Sessions | Nashville Newborn Photographer

When is the best time to book my newborn session?

I like to wait until you are in your second trimester before getting on my calendar! Since it fills up quickly, it’s best to reserve your session as early as possible. I take a limited number of newborn sessions each month so that I can leave space for newborns that arrive early or late. However, I do try my best to accommodate late bookers the best I can so e-mail me either way!! 🙂 Once your due date is on my calendar, you are good to go! Then you will contact me again once the baby is born and we will schedule an official session date.

When is the best time for you to photograph my newborn session?

Newborn sessions are typically scheduled between 7-21 days after the baby is born. This allows for baby to be sleepy and posable for the duration of the session. Since I prefer a more laid back style of newborn photos vs. super posed, it makes our window for shooting larger. If your baby is older than 3 weeks, no worries! It’s still possible to capture beautiful photos! I have photographed “newborns” upwards to 6-8 weeks and still able to capture some really sweet moments.

How can we make sure my baby sleeps during our session?

I have a “Newborn Prep Packet” that I will send to you as soon as your baby has arrived. In this it will have all they key factors to make sure we have a super sleepy baby.

Where does the newborn session take place?

My studio is located in Smyrna Tennessee, right outside of Nashville. This is where all my hats, headbands, props, backdrops.. everything we need to have a complete session. For Newborn sessions, I am all studio light (however I try making it look as close to natural as possible. Just keep this in mind if you are scouring Pinterest). I have snacks and refrigerator stocked with cold waters. I want you to feel at home and welcomed in my studio during our time together. I am also open to traveling for out of state sessions!

I also offer newborn sessions in home and outdoors.

How long do newborn sessions last?

Newborn sessions often run longer due to the nature and frequent soothing of the baby. Expect 2 hours in the studio for the Newborn + Family and 1 hour for just baby session. I do not rush the session and allow for baby to take as many breaks as needed. The baby’s comfort and safety is my priority.

When and how do we pay?

A retainer is required to get on the calendar! Once the non refundable retainer has been received, your due date is on my calendar. I take a limited number of newborn sessions each month so I can account for babies being born late or early.

The remainder of the session fee is due three weeks before your due date.

There are other Payment plans depending on due date available. Please inquire for more details 🙂

Do I receive digital images from my session?

Absolutely!! I choose the best images from the session and  I hand edit each one. Your gallery is delivered via online so you are able to easily view and share with friends and family. How many images you receive depends on how well the baby cooperates.

MPix.com is always recommended  to print your photos. This is the consumer printing lab of my professional lab. They are very reasonably priced and shipping is fairly quick! I allow my clients to print their photos as they wish, but I do recommend staying away from Walmart, Walgreens, Costco, etc as they yield varied results and will not resemble the images as you see them on your computer.

I also offer albums and printed photo wood blocks at an additional cost. You will be able to see examples of these at my studio during our session.

What is your turn around time?

My contract states up to three weeks, but I try to get them back ASAP. Just depends on the current work load and season. I will be able to tell you a better idea of when to expect your images at your session.

Have you taken any workshops in newborn posing?

When I first started I was mostly self taught. As I continued to grow my art, I wanted to make sure I continued to learn and grow all technical and safety aspects of my niche. I think it is important to constantly sharpen your skills and to stay inspired.

I have attended many online Newborn Retreat Workshops, a personal skype one on one with Skye Johansen, a two day hands on workshop by Rachel Vanoven in Indianapolis Indiana, two times have studied under Erin Tole out of Portland Oregon. Most recently I attended a workshop by Angie Knutson and Bohac Photography.

All of these photographers are the leaders in this industry and best of the best. I have also studied in Maternity, Family and Birth photography as well.

How long have you been working with posing Newborns?

I have 13  years of experience in newborn posing. As a child, I was always calling dibs on holding whatever baby was around .. not much has changed 😉
